It Could Be Worse

Submitted by Mandi on December 6, 2009 – 5:11 pm10 Comments

December 2nd was our family day. We were supposed to have a doctors appointment, but because my cell phone died in the middle of the night, my alarm didn't go off. I woke up five minutes before the scheduled appointment time. So it was a rocky start... it really set the precedence for the rest of the day.

We went to the mall to see Santa and to get a great picture of Chubbs with Santa. Mission accomplished.

We went to Build-A-Bear for the first time, and walked out with Speedy, a Nascar driving puppy!

We had lunch at our favorite restaurant, Quaker Steak n Lube. We were the only people there, and it was so nice to have some hot wings on a cold and rainy day. Literally, the wings were hot!

We stopped at Toys 'R' Us for some sneaky Christmas shopping, and walked the entire store. For the middle of the day, there were a lot of people there!

Then we headed home.

We take a familiar route home.. interstate part of the way, and then cut through a town and get on a state route through the country.

Chubbs fell asleep almost immediately when we headed home. I soon followed, dozing off in the passenger seat. There's something about a full stomach and a long car ride that just puts me to sleep. So anyway, the two of us were asleep, Hubs was driving. At the edge of the shortcut town, where it had been raining all day, an SUV slammed on his brakes. Hubs slammed on ours. Unfortunately, our car did not stop.

Here's our car. You can see the road in the background, that's where the accident happened. This is the entrance to a subdivision where we pulled the vehicles off to to wait for the police and tow truck. Our car is considered totaled because the cost to repair is more then the value of the car.

Here's the SUV. There's his damage.

I'm so thankful that the speed limit was 35, and that we were the only cars involved. I'm so thankful the carseat was installed correctly. I'm thankful that there were no injuries, that Chubbs was asleep and only woke up upon impact. As soon as we pulled the cars off the road, I grabbed him from the backseat. It was raining, and cold, but I just wanted to hold him and thank God he was alright.

It's amazing how a family fun day can turn into such a headache. It's amazing that how in an instant, things could have been a lot worse. Since the accident, I have been shaken. It is stressful to have to deal with insurance and the body shop, and having to go buy another car. That was our only car, and we need a new. We've learned some things too from this... we should always carry full coverage on our vehicle, we should hug our loved ones every chance we get, and we should find another way home!
